Acerca del evento

A 2-part event, with the first session in the morning and the second in the early afternoon. Take part in both - or only in one!

Major themes that we will cover: balance, handstands, mobility, coordination, rhythm, partner communication, floor communication, improvisation, soft & subtle body awareness

What can you expect?

Participants will get out of this exactly what they put into it.

For those who wish to learn hand balancing, this class will be an in-depth introduction.

For those who wish to become more capable movers or dancers, this class will give you tools to boost your confidence.

Expect to be challenged, and expect to grow in the face of that challenge. The aim of this workshop is to share useful tools and approaches that will inspire further practice.

Part 1 - Contact Improvisation

8-11am

A comprehensive investigation into the practice of contact improvisation. We will develop the physical, mental and emotional elements of the dance using exercises, games, and open scores. Our methodology will be an eclectic mix of aikido, contemporary dance, theatre, and more. The last hour of the workshop will be a “jam”, which is an open space to put into practice all that’s been discovered. All levels are welcome. Bring comfortable clothing and an open mind.

Break - 11am-1pm - lunch, beach, naps, work - enjoy a long break before continuing with part 2!

Part 2 - Handbalancing & Flexibility

1-3pm

A technical laboratory where we will develop the foundational abilities related to handbalancing and flexibility — things like handstands, splits, etc. In addition to these skill-specific techniques, we’ll also develop general movement abilities including balance, coordination, and more.

The general split of the workshop will be ~80/20 — 80% practice, 20% theory and observation. Each practitioner will work at their own level.

The workshop will be geared more towards beginners and intermediary practitioners, but even advanced practitioners will find their comfort zone stretched wide open. Bring comfortable clothing and a journal/notepad.

About your facilitator - Forrest

I believe wholeheartedly in a balanced approach to movement. Yin/Yang, fast/slow, hard/soft, disciplined/liberated — everything has its place and it’s application. Some of you may know me as a dancer, but my practice extends far beyond the dance floor. I’ve been studying various movement methodologies for the last 10 years, from acrobatics to martial arts, and I’ve taught contact dance classes at awake for the last 2 years.
